Dr. David Alfaro

Certified Specialist in Prosthodontics

Dr. Alfaro was born and raised in Vancouver, and after a brief stint of studying Jazz both in Canada and the US, he obtained his B.Sc. in Kinesiology at Simon Fraser University. He then decided to pursue a career in dentistry and obtained his D.D.S at Columbia University in New York. It was there where he was introduced to the field of Prosthodontics.

Fortunately, the year that Dr. Alfaro was completing his training in New York, UBC Dentistry planned an expansion of their Graduate Programs in Dentistry to include prosthodontics, and he was accepted and graduated in the first class of the Graduate Prosthodontics program. During his graduate training, Dr. Alfaro gained valuable didactic and clinical training in all aspects of complex prosthodontics, including implant dentistry, crown and bridge dentistry, removable prosthodontics, and hospital based dentistry. A key component of the UBC Graduate Dental programs was an interdisciplinary treatment planning seminar, which offered students the opportunity to discuss complex treatments requiring the care of multiple specialists.

As part of his training at UBC, Dr. Alfaro also completed a Masters in Craniofacial Sciences, where his thesis was the evaluation of the fit of computer designed and milled (CAD/CAM) porcelain crowns using a novel Micro CT analysis technique. The research has been accepted for publication in The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, and includes unique 3-dimensional images of the internal fit between crowns and their abutments. Dr. Alfaro’s research has been presented at various local continuing education lectures and is being expanded upon by current graduate students at UBC.

Outside of dentistry, Dr. Alfaro likes to enjoy the beautiful city we live in. He enjoys biking and swimming, loves a good piece of chicken karaage at Suika, and has been known to rock it out at karaoke night at the Legion from time to time.

Dr. Alfaro is licensed to practice dentistry in British Columbia as a board certified prosthodontist, having completed the National Dental Specialty Examination, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dental Specialists of Canada (FRCD(C)).
