Cold Sore Treatment

If you are able to get in to see us for laser therapy before the sore appears in the beginning stages where tingling or subtle pain is occurring, we can usually stop an outbreak before it surfaces. Most people get their sores in the same spots, so they are able to sense when one is developing.


If you don’t catch it in time, and you already start to develop a blister, our laser treatment can still provide aid, as the laser works to break down the nerve cells creating instant relief and increases the production of collagen which helps the patient heal faster.

Triggers

Not every cold sore is caused by the same thing but there are a few common factors that may trigger an episode. Some alarms that can wake up a dormant virus are:

Treatment

Antiviral prescription medications may help shorten the length of an outbreak. With episodic therapy, oral medication is administered at the first sign of an outbreak. Topical medications include prescription antiviral creams and non-prescription cream, docosanol (Abreva). Abreva is the only over-the-counter topical medicament approved by the FDA for cold sore treatment.


Laser wavelengths are the best bet if you really want to speed up the healing process and get your life back. A laser bandage is created to protect the sore and promote healing. Dr. Farzin Ghannad earned his dental degree from the University of Goettingen, Germany in 1996. He moved to Ottawa in 1997 where he maintained a successful general dental practice until 2004. 


In 2007, Dr. Ghannad completed his 3 year Masters Specialty training in Periodontics and Implant Surgery at the University of British Columbia earning a diploma in Periodontics & Master of Science. 


He is one the two founders of Implant Perio Centre in Vancouver and Implant Perio Centre in North Vancouver.


Dr. Ghannad held the position of Associate Director of Graduate Periodontics and Implant Surgery at the University of British Columbia from 2010-2015. During that period, he was also affiliated with Vancouver General Hospital and performed periodontal and implant treatment on medically compromised patients. 


Currently, he works in his private practices in Vancouver, North Vancouver and serves the community in Kamloops and Yellowknife. As an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, he is involved in training of periodontal residents. 


Dr. Ghannad actively lectures nationally and internationally in study clubs and hands on courses on the subject of periodontics and implant surgery.

As a Certified Specialist in Periodontics and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Ghannad is involved in surgical and didactic training of future dentists and specialists in the field of periodontics. Currently he maintains a private practice in Vancouver and routinely provides specialty care in the Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan. 


Dr. Farzan Ghannad grew up in Ottawa and attained his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. After a few successful years in private practice, he completed an intense three-year surgical specialty residency at the University of British Columbia, for which he earned a Masters in Craniofacial Science as well as a Diploma in Periodontics and Implant Surgery.

Dr. Farzan Ghannad has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the “Kathleen McAnulty Memorial Prize”, the “Nobel BioCare Achievement Award”, and the “Biomet 3i Canada Inc Prize” for excellence in clinical performance. He was also among the few to be awarded the “UBC DMD Graduate Teaching Assistant Award” in 2011/12.


Farzan is devoted to his patients’ ultimate comfort and care at the state of the art Northshore Implant Perio Centre in North Vancouver; but his time away from his dental practice is dedicated to his family and engaging in an active lifestyle, including spending as much time as possible skiing on the mountains during the winter season and cycling around our beautiful city.

She earned her dental degree from Cayetano Heredia University, Peru in 1998. During the next 2 years, she worked as a general practitioner and concurrently pursued a Diploma in Periodontics in Peru.


Dr. Garcia then moved to Vancouver spending the next 3 years earning two additional postgraduate degrees from the University of British Columbia, namely a Diploma in the Specialty of Periodontics and a Masters in Science. During her studies she was awarded with the prestigious Joseph Tonzetich Scholarship in recognition of her promising research abilities. 


She serves the community in various positions, such as her private practice specializing in Implant & Periodontal care in Vancouver and her teaching affiliation with the Faculty of Dentistry at UBC.


Dr. Garcia is the Director of Undergraduate Periodontics at the University of British Columbia and serves the Division of Periodontics as a Clinical Assistant Professor.
